Imperial War Museum

Don McCullin Interactive

In 2010 the Imperial War Museum ran an exhibition called "Shaped By War" featuring the photography of the photojournalist Don McCullin. This interactive touch screen was built for that exhibition.
I had been aware of the acclaimed war photographer Don McCullin for many years. I remember pouring over a book of his iconic images as a teenager in my secondary school library. It was an absolute privilege to be invited to build an interactive for the Imperial War Museum to celebrate his career.

The interactive was built for a touch screen using Adobe Flash. It featured an XML back end linking to a database of images. Users could scroll a timeline and choose to view images from Don's many conflicts or to view facts from important events in photo journalism at the time.

On photography Don McCullin has this to say "Photography for me is not looking, it’s feeling. If you can’t feel what you’re looking at, then you’re never going to get others to feel anything when they look at your pictures."
